So much thanks to Yaron for taking my four a.m. plea email and working his magic. I’m still not able to blog from mozilla, but he says that may be a space issue. Small steps. Why I am up at this unholy hour when I was also up at 4 a.m. is a question for another day. Hopefully one where I had more sleep.

Anyway, comment away, how about we do a yes/no on did Edwards really father a baby with another woman? I say nay because believe you me, I so would have been his baby mama and yet, he didn’t even so much as reply to any of my emails or myraid drooling posts.

That summer completely reshaped how I deal with people. I am always watching, listening, observing. I never volunteer information and have mastered the question that sounds like an answer. I never again want to be in the position of being where I am not wanted, with people who don’t want me around.
So it is that I don’t make friends easily. And I have no delusions that any relationship is permanent.
People come and they go and all you can hope for is that you notice when they’ve left.

Unfortunately, I didn’t quite internalize that lesson as well as I thought I had…somehow I still managed to convince myself that some relationships were permanent. Mah Bad. (This stupid project is undoing a lot of the ‘healing’ I’ve done in the past two months and is starting to feel very much like emotional cutting. Grrr arrrgghh.) I am so Ghez.

HAHAHAAHA I haven’t changed a bit:

I’ve got like four moods: confused, bitter, angry and whimsical.

Usually in that order.

My blog has been acting weird for the last couple of days. But not weird enough for it to go down completely or in any way that seems discernable to anyone but me. Although casca and Ari’s comments about my comments section being down suggests that it’s not just in my head…although, the fact that they were able to leave those comments suggests that it might be in my head. I dunno. I did one of the wordpress help forum’s and they suggested that it might just be that I have to clear the cache on my computer. But I am loathe to erase all that stuff since there will then be websites that I’ll never be able to get back into again because I won’t remember the name or passwords that I used to get in.
All of this is to say, I’m back in school. It turns out that I suck at writing. Everyone in my class is better than I am. I am a loser who has done nothing with her life and never will. Going to kill myself now.

In honor of Bastille Day, Jamie was playing the Les Miserables soundtrack in the background of a poker tournament at his house. I love Les Miserables. I’ve seen the show upwards of twenty times on two continents, with everyone I could ever convince to go with me, having been dragged to the show. I haven’t heard the whole score in a while, but I still know all the words (and to the chagrin of all the players at the game) sung along with the entire soundtrack. Yes, even the duets. I can do them all on my own.
But to be fair, I’ve had years of practice.
I choke back the bile as I write this, but it was 18 years ago that my lab partner and best friend introduced me to Les Miz. We were doing our Chem lab — well, I was doing it, he was “rebelling against the man” somewhere in a corner. He walked over to me, stuck one of the buds of his headphones in my ear and said “listen to this.” I listened. I pulled out the bud and said “what the hell is that French crap?” Now, I know this is exactly what I said because when I fell in love with the musical and we’d listen to it nonstop everyday for years, he would always say in a voice supposedly mimicking mine “oh, you want to hear it again? I thought it was just French crap!” Of course, it was neither French, nor crap.
It was the voice of people who would not be slaves again. It was was magic and it was Matt.
Does everyone have that friend that nobody else in the world thinks they should be friends with? Just bad news in every way possible, but for some reason the two of you are inseparable? That was me and Matt. Matt was both unpopular and a troublemaker. He would adhere to our school’s dress code, but only in the most unconventional ways. His blazer was always on backwards, his tie hung just a few inches shy off the ground, (else it was tied around his head) oh, and he wore flip flops. Why? Because the rule book didn’t say he couldn’t.
Matt was also a genuis.
I didn’t mind doing all the chem labs, because he wrote all the reports, finished all my homework and tutored me for every test and we’d both walk away with A’s. I was the worker, he was the brain. And yeah, he’d call me Pinky and we’d plot on how to take over the world.
We got through Physics and Debate matches the same way. I prepared our well crafted openings, he delivered the devastating rebuttals and closings.
We were also in all the same plays and did Model U.N. together.
Matt was the first “suicidal” teen I ever met. And honestly, there was never a day that I’d leave him at the bus stop that I didn’t worry I’d never see him again. He also had a wicked temper.
Matt and I were literally day and night — okay, I mean racially day and night. But we were best friends, despite the best efforts of all of my teachers. Whereas, I was smiley happy Dawn most of the time, he was angry grumpy bearded Arab guy all the time.
“Dawn, Matt is a troubled kid,” my teachers would say “you should make friends in your own grade.” Oh yeah, Matt was also an upperclassman.
Matt would convince me to cut class because “who needs it, man. You know all that stuff already. You’re almost as smart as I am.” I have always been a sucker for a boy who tells me I’m smart. We’d leave campus to go to the comic book store or the pizzeria.
We would sit for hours on the grass listening to the cassettes (on his walkman!) that his friend had recorded for him of the Les Miz Symphonic version. It was like three and a half hours long, but who noticed. We sat back to back, each of us with an ear bud and sang and sang. I had never seen the show live, so Matt would act out the scenes and tell me “okay, in the show, Thernadier’s head pops up out of a manhole!” Or “Here, Javert starts marching in time with the students and that’s how he goes undercover. It’s so kewl”
Matt also spelled words the way he felt they should spelled, not the way the Man told him to spell them.
And then one day, he said “I have an idea!”
“Okay!”
Instead of our usual haunts, we hit the subway and took the R train to Times Square.
“We’re going to see Les Miserable in person, Dawnie.” Yeah, Matt didn’t care that I didn’t like to be called Dawnie. In fact, that made him call me that even more.
“But I don’t have any money, Matt.”
“Don’t worry. They have plenty of seats…we just have to wait.”
We hung around the theater and waited till people came out to smoke their cigarettes or stretch their legs and then as they started to trickle inside, he grabbed my hand and pulled me inside. We ran up the the stairs to the balcony and took seats way in the back.
We couldn’t see squat… but we knew the score by heart and Matt whispered the action to me. “Remember how I told you about the barricades? That’s it!”
I can still remember leaning into the stage, squinting… listening…mouthing the words…bursting into tears when Val jean dies and jumping up to give a standing ovation when it was all done. It was the Wednesday matinee show, so it was still light out when we exited the theater. I remember thinking I couldn’t possibly be any happier in my whole life. This was the best day ever. Actually, I think I wrote that in my Hello Kitty diary with the little key. “Dear Cindy, I just had the best day ever!” What? Doesn’t everyone name their diaries?
Eventually, Matt would tell me he loved me and I would stammer an awkward “um…yeah, me too. But you know… you.” You think I’m kidding. I’m not.
But we were already drifting apart, I had found overachieving friends in my own grade and they all thought Matt was a loser. And while I liked Matt’s rebellious ways, my mother would kick my ass if I “come on Dawn, let’s both not take the SATs and just see what happens,” which was among the last of his genius plans before he graduated.
And then, one day we had a huge fight which ended with him grabbing me by the throat and me cutting his hand with an exacto knife from art class until he let go. I seethed something about him not having to worry about killing himself if he ever touched me again because it would be the last thing he ever did.
He called me a cunt and we never spoke again.
A few years later I received a package at college with no return address. Inside were both his Les Miz tapes. There was no note. It was the first time I had heard the music since my junior year of high school.
When I got my first real job in New York, the first thing I did was buy orchestra seats to Les Miz for me and my mom.
Five years ago I bought myself the Symphonic CDs and three years ago I uploaded them to my ipod. Les Mis is such a part of me now, that I hardly ever associate it with Matt anymore. In fact, tonight was the first time I’ve reconnected him to my love of that show in some time.
But I still have those tapes in my car. My love of Les Miz is his.
And now I think it’s time for me to start playing Scrabble again. You know you missed my other blog.
