Half the promises people say were never kept, were never made. – Edgar Watson Howe

It is useless to hold a person to anything he says while he is in love, drunk, or running for office. ~Shirley MacLaine

This post has been stewing in my brain since the President announced, in April, that he was running for reelection. The announcement basically triggered an early Liberal Festivus!

All the sad sacks with “Hope” and “Change” bumper stickers fractured limbs and strained muscles to take the proverbial stand to show America where, on the doll, Obama had touched them. In an essay popularly circulated in some twitter circles, one author estimates that President Obama promised him almost more than two thousand dollars in undelivered funds!

Dyyyaam.

To think I was pissed when President-elect Obama didn’t send me my “O” t-shirt in the promised 6-8 weeks! I should have held out for cash!

The litany of angry charges pouring in from the left are diverse, layered and lofty. Much like the left itself.

The President started a war without congressional approval!

The President didn’t close Gitmo!

Where are all the gay marriages we were promised?!

And here’s an actual quote: So I deem him not just a failure, but a menace, a stain on our nation, a disgrace, a big fat black mark in the history books.

Yikes!

(I don’t want to know what that guy says about Jefferson, whose own children were bought and sold; or Jackson who slaughtered American Indians; or Roosevelt who authorized internment camps; or Lincoln who burned half the country to the ground; or Hoover…)

Yet, here I sit (actually, lounge, cause that’s how I roll) prepared to make the case for President Obama’s reelection. And I promise to do so without even pointing at his possible opposition. Much. (DUDE. Have you ever listened to Herman Cain speak? Say…about the constitution?
LOL.

Let’s just say I’m all in on the Bachmann/Palin challenge to the Obama/Anybody but Biden…ugh okay, fine Biden 2012 ticket.

By way of background, there is something about me that you may already know, if you’ve been reading the brilliant prose I’ve been publishing on the interwebs for the last (gulp) eight years, or that you may not know, having only recently discovered my brilliant prose.

The first President I voted for was Jimmy Carter. Not because I’m that old, though I am pretty old, but because my mom thought it would be fun to let her four-year-old pull the levers. And I pulled them but good! She picked me up and and I slid my tiny little hand all the way down the Democratic line DESTROYING those levers along the way! And then with two hands (and an assist from mom) I pushed the metal bar to record the votes and free us from the booth. It was AWESOME. And, without divulging too much, this is how I’ve voted in every election since then. Although, now New York has some weird faux electronic system and there are the five years I spent voting in Connecticut. So, there you have it, I am a Democrat through and through.

Unapologetically so.

While I have great affinity for socially conservative principles, the Republican party embodies none of those. I can’t even “argue” with Republicans anymore because the only consistent party identity that I’ve discerned is “we’re for whatever the Democrats are not for.” Under President Bush the federal government MORE THAN DOUBLED, yet now they’re all about small government? Under president Bush, the United States government essentially nationalized more than 30 banks, yet President Obama is the communist boogie man? President Reagan presided over one of the largest tax increases in our history, but President Obama is robbing the rich blind? Um…er…okkaayyy. Good talk, good talk.

So, *I* will be voting for President Obama in 2012 *knock wood* *spit spit* that I am still alive AND that he’s still alive (oh man, why do I freak myself out with thoughts like those??!) because he’s the Democratic nominee. And that’s how *I* do. But I can hear you now, “but Dawn, I am not you, why should I vote for President Obama in 2012?”

Well, the reasons are various and many.

President Obama has only been in office a little over three years and he’s already accomplished sooo much.

He negotiated the historic healthcare reform bill and now 32 million additional Americans will receive healthcare coverage. I personally, am now saddled with enormous premium bills because the insurance companies have pretty much just passed the added costs on to consumers, but should I have a layabout child one day, it’ll be good to know that said slacker will be covered well into his or her twenties.

He authorized a number of stimulus packages that saved the American auto industry and stabilized the financial sector. This is something that both Democrats AND Republicans should like since it continued the bailout policies started under President Bush/Paulson AND rescued the union heavy auto industry in the same way the Republican administration protected their friends in corporate America.

President Obama’s justice department has deported more illegal aliens than any other administration in the history of the United States. How can anyone who seriously thumps their chest about undocumented immigrants NOT support the administration that is so vigorously enforcing our nation’s laws?

President Obama initiated military action against Libya to defend America’s interests.

Oh man, this is sounding real Republicany and is making me uncomfortable. So how about this, President Obama also, made improving America’s infrastructure a priority, reversing President Bush’s policy of doing nothing – the first President since Coolidge to so neglect the nations highways, grids and buildings. President Obama’s cash for clunkers program got inefficient vehicles off the road, spurred auto sales and subsidized my Beamer. His goal to get fuel efficiency above 50mpg is next up.

The President also lifted bans on stem cell research, retired the clunky and expensive shuttle program. He reversed many of the Bush administration closed door policies and now allows photographs of our war dead, requires all federal agencies to comply with the Freedom of Information Act and refuses to let corporations in arrears on taxes, bid for federal contracts.

President Obama is also seen as a leader on the international stage, winning the Nobel Peace Prize just months after taking office!

The President is a constitutional law scholar and given that the new Republican house spent their first days in power reading aloud from it, such a scholar should be exactly the man to work with this Congress. Indeed, even as Speaker Boehner threatened to slit our nation’s econimic throat, President Obama was able to forge a compromise to maintain our AAA rating.

The President appointed twice as many women to the US Supreme Court than any President before him. He provided incentives to employers to hire chronically unemployed Americans.

The list of his accomplishments go on and on, click the link I provided above.

But what of the things the President *promised* to accomplish? Well, Gitmo is still open, but I don’t think anyone seriously believes that the President could shutdown the Bush administration’s terrorist holding pen without thorough vetting of the occupants and adequate relocation facilities. No one wants to answer to the parents or children of victims murdered by prematurely or inadvisably released terrorists.

DOMA and Dont Ask Don’t Tell are still the law of the land. This reality is disappointing, but I will use my “one time” chip and punt this away with “there is no Republican candidate that will overturn either of these laws. We have a two-party system, so either you’ll have a Democrat discriminating against gay Americans or a Republican. I choose Democrat and hope this shameful chapter in my country’s history soon comes to a close.”

The President promised immigration reforms and seems to have gone the other way. Indeed, as you know he’s the deportation champ. However, for now, these are our immigration laws. He took an oath to uphold them. The same as I did when I became an attorney. I don’t like all the laws… I certainly don’t understand why Americans over the age of majority aren’t given one freebee murder or why BMW drivers can’t drive as fast as they want, but there it is. When the laws change, the Justice Department will move on.

President Obama made good on his promise to wrap up the war in Iraq — sans obnoxious banner flying — and he has ramped up efforts in Afghanistan. Not to mention he gave the kill order that ended the 10-year-long hunt for Osama bin Laden. Oh, did I mention it? Whoops. My bad.

The President did not end the ill-advised Bush tax cuts, but given that the Republican opposition was willing to send the United States into default over the debt ceiling fight, my guess is compromising with the lame duck Congress on these tax cuts saved yet another melodramatic stand off with the Republican leadership. The President’s current plan to begin taxing the trappings of luxury and the mega rich may well go a long way to close the gap between the national debt and disproportionate taxation.

But what of the lamentations of the Matt Damon types who believe the President has let them down? Comedian Elon James White has hilariously dubbed these (mostly) white liberals “Emo Progs.” They believed that the magical negro, dubbed by EJW, Jesus H. Dumbeldore would deliver free love and legal drugs and Priuses in every driveway, maaannn! Except, candidate Barack Obama ran a distinctly centrist campaign… he didn’t even come out in favor of gay marriage on the campaign trail. I don’t know why they thought he was some kind of secret hippie… I blame Donald Trump and his “sources.” And Oprah.

I’m kidding.

I would never blame Oprah for anything. That woman is a saint whose visage should be printed on our money.

President Obama has the tricky task of being the President of *America.* That means he’s the President of men like Vice President Dick Cheney, who would never in a bazillion years vote for him and he’s the President of awesome bloggers like Dawn Summers who would never vote against him unless he signed some “Dawn Summers will be imprisoned for life if she votes for me” bill. My interests as someone who loves the United States and wants to see my country thrive, prosper and win all the gold medals in every sport ever, are most closely aligned with President Obama’s steady cool, cerebral leadership. I may not understand why Larry Summers has a job in the Obama administration, as opposed to say, a job breaking rocks in a prison yard; but not for one second do I believe the President doesn’t understand the economic, social, or geo-political forces at play. I don’t know that he’s making every decision I would make, but I trust his decision-making.

He’s not a God, he is a man. Probably the second best man I’ve seen in that job in my lifetime. Plus, I could stand another four years of listening to the President’s melifluous addresses and staring dreamily into his pretty pretty face. (Though, Mr. President, please quit smoking! I want to see you around for a long long time and I do not want your face destroyed by smoke or your awesome voice snatched by a cancer tumor. Please and thank you. What? You don’t think the President reads my blog? He totally does! I would read his blog if he had one! Oh, does he have one…um…*whistles*)

So, go forth and prod some sense into a Republican — President Obama has represented their interests (he’s even explicitly signed laws saying that abortions would not be funded at all under the new healthcare bill) far better than half the current field of Republican candidates. Then, go hug an Emo Prog, I guess they’re not used to not getting their way (man, imagine being a poor black teenage girl who campaigned her little heart out for Bill Clinton only to have him throw all her interests under the bus in, oh, 16 months flat. I COULDN’T EVEN DRINK MY SORROWS AWAY, YET!).

My advice? Curl up in your twin bed with a pint of Ben & Jerry’s and play this song till you feel better:

Happy Birthday, Mr. President. I wish you five more years in the White House and decades more of life!

The White House is a fishbowl. It always has been and probably always will be, but I’ve never seen the biography of a President so persistently poked and prodded as that of President Obama. Never mind that, with TWO autobiographies published before he even took the highest office in the land, where he ADMITS to cocaine use for jeebus sake, no President has probably been as transparent as this man. At 30 he wasn’t drunk driving cars into ditches, but yet he gets derided for “community organizing.” And yet our press, in the name of the AMERICAN PEOPLE ask the AMERICAN PRESIDENT to “just show us one more time that you are in fact American.” Then ask some dude with a Russian wife, if that’s “good enough”?

@martybeckerman Has anyone made a “but it’s a dry hate” Arizona joke yet??

The nation’s totally not racist state of Arizona has legalized racial profiling!

“It’s going to change our lives,” said Emilio Almodovar, a 13-year-old American citizen from Phoenix. “We can’t walk to school any more. We can’t be in the streets anymore without the pigs thinking we’re illegal immigrants.”

Protesters gathered in Miami Friday evening at the Freedom Tower, where thousands of Cuban refugees were processed after fleeing the communist revolution.

Great. Just great. Oh, and by the by President Obama nice move pulling Napolitano out of the Arizona statehouse, her successor is awesome.

Oh, and lest anybody be confused, I am firmly and steadfastly against illegal immigration. Heck, catch me on certain days and I’m against legal immigration — but giving the cops the right to stop brown people on the street to “check their papers” is nothing short of a dungpile of horse manure. Hmm…maybe I’ll help Arizona out and go looking for the Russian, Polish and Canadian illegals. Jackasses.

Hey! That means you too. Close ‘em.
Good.
Ok, um, wow. Is it just me or is the President of the United States a moron?
Actually, it can’t just be me. I’m watching this live town hall on CNN and somewhere between his “why would an employer hire a guy who’s been to jail when unemployment’s at 10% and he can hire a guy who hasn’t been to jail? Who’s just been laid off?” And his “yeah, I had to pay that 10% penalty too. Whoa. It’s no fun” I decided it must actually be a prerequisite for the office.
Like if you’re stupid enough to want this job, well, yep, you’re stupid.
Good grief!
And why for the love of everything holy, is he *stumping* WITH Joe Biden the day after the State of the Union???
Biden is NOT an asset. Extemporaneous speaking is NOT his forte.
President chillin in Flo-Ridah is NOT a good look when the rest of us are freezing our asses off.
Somebody needs to be smacked upside the head.
Um. Okay, rant over. Somebody let the bad people open their eyes again.

If this was goodbye, an air of the desultory clung to it, as a man once seen as destined for high office stood in the basement of a Midtown hotel and endorsed another politician for another office — governor — once in his sight.
From president to governor to senator, the list of powerful offices that the man, former Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani, once dreamed of capturing is long, and his longing now seems likely to go unrequited. In the past month he has foresworn interest in running for governor and for United States senator. After he endorsed Rick Lazio for governor, even the honorific shouted by reporters at the press conference on Tuesday — Mr. Mayor! Mr. Mayor! — had an antiquated sound to it.

There way must be some nasty skeletons in that closet because I don’t see how Cuomo or *insert laugh* Paterson beats him for Governor.

I have an opinion on health insurance reform in America now!
Okay, okay I am not going to lie to you, I had an opinion on health insurance reform before. It was just the wrong one. I recognized it right away as the wrong one because, well, I looked around and there were some crasszy (crazy-ass! Ha! That was a typo, but I’ve decided to roll with it.) dudes standing next to me (some of them with guns, all of them with bright red faces and a vein throbbing in their neck) and on the other side, waaayyy over there, were Rachel Maddow and Keith Olbermann and OMG THE PRESIDENT! I LOVE YOU MR. PRESIDENT!!
Must. Get. To. The. Other. Side.
The last time I really even thought about the idea was during the Hillary Clinton universal healthcare debacle. (How much credit does she get for not calling a press conference for the express purpose of saying “Told you healthcare reform was hard! Suckers. Peace out.” And then ripping off her mic and throwing it to the floor? Actually, I’d kinda pay to see that.) Anyway, I spent months and months listening and reading.
Well, trying to listen and read.
I am easily distrac…ooh, a penny! It’s SHINY!
Sorry.
Healthcare.
I should explain where I started.

I grew up poor, not Uganda poor or Appalachia poor, shoes and air-conditioning having poor. (No heat or food. I actually remember when grocery stores didn’t take credit cards!) Anyway, the one thing we had in abundance, was healthcare insurance. And my mom wore that shit OUT!
“Ow, I hit my leg.”
Hospital room.
“My stomach hurts.”
Doctor’s office.
“Sure, I’ll eat this tasty, tasty peanut butter and jelly sandwich”
Intensive care.
I went to the dentist practically every week. And there were no premiums or deductibles or prescription fees. But, the upside, except for when I put poison in my mouth and swallowed, I was a very healthy child.
No braces even!
I don’t know what it cost, um, whoever paid for all of it. But, thanks!
I went to college, still covered under my mother’s plan of freeness, but then hit my first “no money, no service” issue. A year on my own and I needed a root canal when I got home for the summer.
Insurance paid for that.
Oh, but the cap and whatever other stuff you neeed after the root canal? Not covered and cost $1200 and nope, dentist did not take credit cards.
You may laugh, but $1200 at that point in my life, may as well have been $12,000 or heck 12 freaking million. Didn’t have it; had Yale tuition and books to pay for with whatever money I did get.
I lost the tooth completely the next year.
And this experience would color my views on healthcare, in a weird way, for a long time.
Everything costs money. Hello, it’s America, if stuff doesn’t cost money, we can’t make money. My college education cost money. My food, clothes and Ashley’s double cookie dough milkshake costs money. Fixing that tooth cost money.
I had a choice to make and I made sure to get two shakes to drown the sorrows of my lost tooth.
I was never moved by the stories of the people who lost their homes because their cancer treatments bankrupted them.
Dude! THEY CURED YOUR FUCKING CANCER!!!
I didn’t have a house, no one I knew had a house, yet these cured emeffers were now whining that “oh no now I have to live like Dawn Summers and her family. Waaa, I wish I had DIED instead.”
I didn’t believe you “deserved” healthcare. I knew an entire neighborhood of people whose “primary care physician” was Kings County Emergency room.
And when they caught a bullet (or you know, broke an arm) they went to the Emergency room and came out with a cast. We signed it. Done and done.
Caps for root canals were for the rich! Study well, work hard and you too might someday be able to afford caps for your teeth.
And jet packs.
Sweet, sweet jetpacks.
So I did. And the next time I needed a root canal, I put a cap so expensive and beautiful on that tooth, I defy you to tell which one of my teeth is real and which is acrylic. American dream fulfilled!
We don’t need to change anything.
Except things have changed.
Hospitals now tack on the charges for the broken arm casts for the uninsured on the insured. Insurance companies have to pay out grossly inflated charges for various procedures, so they stop covering them, oh and, employers and individuals now pay higher premiums for the privilege. Healthcare is this bizarro world where everyone is paying through the nose and ears, but everyone seems to have their hands stretched out and empty pockets.
What does a broken leg cost to reset and cast?
“Well, how much can you pay?” seems to be the answer. How is it that my insurance company can approve the costs for a medically indicated procedure and then after the fact say “nah, on second thought, good luck with that we’re not paying.” A year and a half, nine angry letters, dozens of bitter phone calls and I’m still facing either paying a lawyer (and likely still losing) or paying the bill. There is absolutely NO other entity IN THE WORLD which could get away with some bullshit like that. Except maybe some Putin backed entity.
Under these circumstances, the government MUST step in. The system is beyond broken, it’s fradulent; it’s criminal; it is breaking the citizenry.
No we don’t “deserve” health care. But we do deserve the benefits of our bargains. If we are paying for insurance, these companies shouldn’t be able to change the rules when we show up with our claims. If a blood test costs $12, hospitals shouldn’t be able to charge Blue Cross/Blue Shield $1200 because medicaid will only pay .12, nevermind the millions who will never pay a dime because they aren’t covered under any system.
The reality is, unless we are willing to stomach actually denying treatment to those who can’t pay, hospitals have to make up the difference somewhere. This problem is so intertwined and self perpetuating that only the federal government can fix it.
And that fix isn’t going to be easy. Dude, the problem isn’t easy. And yes, there is going to need to be a public option, and cost management policies and federal oversight.
And how will we pay for it? Uh, taxes, charges and debt. The same way we’ve paid for everything since the Louisiana purchase. Our government decided to bribe the families of the September 11th victims and their families out of suing the airlines. How did we pay for that? How did we pay for the most retarded “education reform” in the history of mankind? Leaving no child behind wasn’t cheap. Our government decided to liberate Iraq. Did we have town halls? Were people screaming about how we were going to pay for it? Nope. And I posit the liberation of Iraq will turn out to be the most expenditure of American money with the least American gain. I hope I’m wrong and we at least get some oil for that blood.
Yeah, I said it.
Our country needs this reform to happen. What happens when people start declaring bankruptcy and defaulting on their loans because little Timmy needed a bone marrow transplant or mama got skin cancer from her carefree single days on beaches and tanning beds? Foreclosures, property depreciation, underwater mortgages, more bankrupties. Rinse. Repeat.
Health care cost, is like a financial landmine built into an already overleveraged system. You don’t know when or where, but you might step on it and it will blow your leg and your life apart.
Oh, and a word to the critics of reforming the healthcare system: careful. Careful with the way you frame the debate.
Be honest. If you are opposing healthcare reform because you believe the only thing the government should do is cut your taxes, say so. Do not frame this as the government is evil; Barack Obama hates white people. Because when buildings in Oklahoma start getting exploded, I don’t want to hear ye olde “well, we didn’t know saying that ‘the government was fascist and that you needed the blood of tyrants for liberty to grow’ was incendiary” excuse.
Careful about the people you are willing to get into bed with in order to insure that we remain trapped in the worst of all possible systems. If the President catches a bullet, liberal Democrats run this country for the next 50 years. Trust that.
Frankly, critics who scoff at the idea that the federal goverment can successfully tackle this crisis baffle me. The United States government, which everyday, for the last 140 years or so has managed the diverse interests of more than 3000 miles of tens of millions of people without civil war; the United States government, currently engaged in, at least three international conflicts, without a draft or hundreds of thousands of dead soldiers, the government that has managed to rest comfortably between TWO other soverign nations WITHOUT a militarized border on either side — that government can’t figure out how to get dialysis for your grandma without putting down’s syndrome babies to death?
Give me a fucking break.
Well, not literally, not sure that my health insurance will cover it.

I was running late for work this morning (man, am I typing that sentence A LOT lately!) and I caught a bit of NY1 on the way out. When the segment ended, the classic “scary political ad chords” began to play and so I watched. Who knew there was a political race on?! Mike Bloomberg keeps sending me “Vote Mike” postcards, so I know he’s not taking my mayoral bid very seriously.
Anyway, the ad goes on and on — evil, no-bid, lawyers (cue suspense murder chords) the whole thing was so laughable, I LAUGHED…right up until…”Paid for by Jon Corzine for Governor.”
WHAT. THE. FUCK?
I have not seen a single poll. Nor read a single news story. I do not even know the NAME of Corzine’s opponent. But, my friends, I *assure you* if Jon Corzine is at the place where he has to run the kind of ad I saw this morning, that race is over and Corzine has lost.
Sad.
We still get to keep the blackish President and filibuster-proof Senate, though…right?
RIGHT??????

Rush Limbaugh is a birther! BAHAHAHAHAHA

On his show today, Limbaugh told listeners, “As you know, I’m in the midst of another harassing audit from New York State and New York City for the last three years. We’re up to 16 different ways I have to prove to New York City and state tax authorities where I have been every day – not just work week – but every day, for the past three years.”

He continued, “Barack Obama has yet to have to prove that he’s a citizen. All he has to do is show a birth certificate. He has yet to have to prove he’s a citizen. I have to show them 14 different ways where the h— I am every day of the year for three years.”

Say whatever you want about the most liberal commentators: Olbermann, Maddow, even Janeane Garofalo, if any one of them had suggested (*on air,* no less) that former President George W. Bush orchestrated the September 11th attacks, they’d be laughed out on their asses so fast by Democrats/ liberals.
However, here is the Republican standard bearer, who is quoted and requoted within an inch of his very loud mouth, spewing birther conspiracy theories! I love it. May the Republican party continue on this path for the rest of my life. Please dear, lord, please!

Oh, and in other awesome news: Michael Steele *credits* Joe the Plumber with helping the Republicans get their “groove” back in the last Presidential campaign!

We couldn’t even argue the basics of the economy in the last election effectively, and it took a happenstance conversation with a plumber before we could really begin to get that groove.

This is the same Joe the plumber who is neither a Joe, nor a plumber AND (by the by) blasted Steele for trying to make the Republican party “hip hop” (presumably because Steele is black and that’s how we do.):

“At a meeting of conservative activists in Milwaukee, Mr. The Plumber had some tough words for the RNC chairman: “Unfortunately we have a chairman up there who wants to redefine conservatism; he wants to make it hip hop, put it in a new package and sell it.”

And then people wonder why Meghan Mccain calls Joe the Plumber “a dumbass”?

Dude, why don’t I stay up watching MSNBC *every* night?

Obama ’12.

Now, I can’t say for certain if these numbnuts voted for President Blinky McBlinkerson who stumbled through a children’s book while my fucking city burned and A MAYOR had to lead the country for a few days because Vice President Vader was hiding in a bunker. Or voted to reelect the same brain trust who patted his FEMA head on the back while a majority American city disappeared beneath the flood waters, but I’d say it was a fair guess.

And so it’s on. I’ve got the President’s back now and forever. You will hear nothing agin him from me and if you criticize him, I’m coming for you.

You criticize a black man for taking his little girls out for ice cream on the first day of summer?
