It works on the assumption that the other person is on the exact same wavelength as you. And if that assumption is wrong (as I believe it is more often than not), then sometimes you have to ask because the other person wasn't thinking what you were thinking. Or wasn't thinking at all. Or had other pressures and stresses on their brain. Or didn't realize something was important to you. etc. etc. etc. If you have to ask for it, and the other person says "sure" then it's yours. If you have to ask for it, and the other person says “sure” then it’s yours.
