I could tell you…but then… you know

The other day @absinthetics posted one of those succinct truisms that I so enjoy: If you have to ask for it, it’s not yours.

I’d been grappling with the issue of confrontation or not confrontation and Absinthetics’ tweet perfectly hit on why I don’t confront.

If I have to ask for it, it’s not mine and…now I don’t want it. Especially when it’s things I should be able to count on.

I disagree that that line is a truism, or anything more than a line that just sounds witty.

It works on the assumption that the other person is on the exact same wavelength as you. And if that assumption is wrong (as I believe it is more often than not), then sometimes you have to ask because the other person wasn’t thinking what you were thinking. Or wasn’t thinking at all. Or had other pressures and stresses on their brain. Or didn’t realize something was important to you. etc. etc. etc.

If you have to ask for it, and the other person says “sure” then it’s yours.
