What can I say, great minds think alike. I’m really surprised that you haven’t received this card from at least 100 people.
; )
Am I banned yet?

Awesome. Good job Mary. And I am also shocked that you and I were the only geniuses to send this to her!

I wasn’t going to ICF on this post but you are forcing me to do so.
Last night I got TWO poetry books at a local library used book sale! One was a Norton intro to poetry college text book and the other was “Facing Nature” by John Updike. Never read anything by Updike before (though I have his Rabbit novels sitting in my amazon “save for later” cart section). But I really enjoyed the selections I read last night from the book. He has it split up into sonnets, poems, etc, and also has this terrific section entitled “Seven Odes to Natural Processes”…including “rot” and other weird stuff (wish I had the book with me at work to tell you more). Anyway it was like sciencey Shel Silverstein or something. Fantastic!

I’m so proud of Angela! Yay! And while Updike is not my favorite, I’m sure there will be some good poems in there. I have a bunch of Norton anthologies (English major).

Why does Updike make me think of the plight of factory workeers…oh..is that upton sinclair? Hmm… do I not know who Updike is?
July 9th, 2010 at 11:13 am
That is Upton Sinclair. Updike wrote about small time America. I don’t know much about him, but he is def. not Upton Sinclair who wrote The Jungle.
July 9th, 2010 at 11:38 am
Updike wrote the “Rabbit Run” novels, books about a guy who was a high school football star — the novels pretty much cover the guy’s whole life, and they’re just about suburbia in the 1960′s and 70′s. They’re kinda depressing, but good.
He also wrote “Brazil”, a novel about two lovers in Brazil, which has some magical realism and I really like.
Never read his poetry.
And yeah, Upton Sinclair wrote the Jungle. Also depressing, but in a different way.

Whoops, meant basketball star.

Oh, and yay, Angela! You can do a poetry wednesday guest post on Updike now!
July 9th, 2010 at 12:02 pm
Shouldn’t the tagline be changed to “Happy Birthday Season!”?

Thanks pdov and pearatty for being proud of me–you guys have been assistant professors in my poetry schooling!
I already have a poetry Wednesday idea for one of the Updike poems.
