Audience Participation Weekend
Wooo, it’s Friday! And I. Just. Got. Paid!
I’m a good mood so far today. (Getting to wake up late, after a Riots win against Brooklyn’s natural enemies, will do that.) Anyway, for the past few weeks or so, I’ve been on a quest to get some new music. (My 14-hour-workdays for the last 9 weeks (yes ONLY 9 WEEKS BUT FEELS LIKE 90 YEARS) means I have, essentially, gone through my 2000+ song ipod oh, about 100 times…and I just can’t…I can barely stand to listen to Billy Joel anymore. BILLY JOEL!) So, I have been trying to watch MTV, CMT, and VH1 to get some new stuff that I’d like and I also check out songs people mention a lot (Ken Wheaton: that fire song is IDIOTIC!). The most excellently awesome Texas April, kindly provided me with a playlist (and tricked me into signing up for a new site (dropbox.com…I haven’t yet tested out their posting features…) She then blogged about the process and I found that funny:
I have this friend Dawn. She’s smart, super funny, totally hot, and in general – awesome. However there are some things we need to work on to enhance the package. For starters, her taste in music.
A quick glance through her Twitter timeline will tell you she’s got issues. There is far more Miley Cyrus and Nickelback than any self-respecting 29-year-old woman should have. Also, holy hell did I create a Twitter monster.
RAWR, TWITTER MONSTER HUNGRY…which reminds me, I’m actually gonna do a twitter post today…
Anyway, Mary -driven mostly by instincts of self-preservation, actuallly got in on the act. So, go read April’s post, click below the fold and check out Mary’s choices and then leave your own suggestions in the comments. Note: Heavy metal = never gonna happen; classical music = hella never gonna happen.
Beyond that, I really am totally open. I love everything from Miley Cyrus to like Hillary Duff and everything in between!
I keed, I keed…my ipod really does have EVERYTHING on it. Ask Alceste.

I’ve actually added more songs to the list – and because I have no idea when I’ll be in your car again, I may add even more.

This is the alt/indie cd. Let me know if you want a prog rock/rock/(I guess no metal) or an electronic/ambient cd as well.

Given what I know about your taste, and my encyclopedic knowledge of music, here’s what I’d recommend:
Black Eyed Peas, “Joints & Jam” (early single)
Blaque, “Bring It All To Me” (you might know that one already)
Usher, “Simple Things” (you might know that one too)
Skye Sweetnam, “Sharada”
The Dream, “Walking on the Moon”

Yaron I didn’t know any of those! Will check them out.
Mary, I think “electronic” and “rock/rock” might suffer from the qualities that I hate about metal/classical. I hate noise. And if I cant discern an actual beat and be able to understand actual words, it’s a no-go. Sorry, Chopin. Just sounds like screeching noise (many rap songs also irritate me for that same reason, just noise interspersed with “fuck that bitch ass cop.”)

I’ll send Peter, he knows what’s up.
If you want to rock out I love this British song (NSFW):

I love the Postal Service cd – love the lyrics and the music.

If you are going to get me into poetry I am going to get you into Nina Simone. It would be obvious to just suggest “Feeling Good,” but really, you should go ahead and get yourself one of her cds. My first one ever (a zillion years ago) was “Nina Simone: The Colpix Years,” and that one has done right by me, but there are a bunch of other compilation type cds that are all good.

“I hate noise.” – hmmm…I may need to burn another cd without the Ministry, NIN, Black Flag and Wire. I was going to add a Minor Threat song to the mix, good thing I didn’t.

Angela, here’s my problem with Nina Simone (love Heather Headley though….wait, am I being racist and confusing her again…Heather is Nina’s daughter right?) Anyway, my problem with Nina Simone is she sounds like a dude. So, I just wish she were a dude, or like change her name to like “Joe,” so I stop expecting a woman and then get a dude. I would totally love her, if I wasn’t always like “who is this guy, I like this” and then the answer is “Nina.” CREEPS ME OUT!
August 14th, 2009 at 12:29 pm
Nina’s daughter actually performs under the name Simone, and I don’t think her real name is Heather, so, yup, you’re racist.
Get over the dudeness and listen to the g.d. music. Miley Cyrus’s voice ain’t exactly angelic.

Uh oh, trouble brewing.

Oh and you should get that Kid Cudi song where he samples Poker Face. That song hits. Hard.

Now, you know I cut you a lot of slack considering you hadn’t ever heard ‘Stairway to Heaven’ until you were, um, 29, but if you’re nice, I will burn you a copy of my Aretha Franklin: Queen of Soul box set and/or my Frank Sinatra: The Capitol Singles boxed set. The Sinatra set is back when he was young and the music was more fun, not his later “Chairman of the Board” cranky years. I keep the two sets on either side of my apartment, because if they get too close to each other, they glow with internal awesomeness, not unlike Indiana Jones’ Shankara stones.

Oh, and trust in Mary’s taste. It’s better than good, it’s psychadelicfunkalicious.
