Yup, he’s the next Carter

Job losses in June reach 9.5%.

Just like the Republicans predicted, these are the highest levels of national unemployment in 26 years… when Jimmy Carter was President!

Oh. Wait.

I imagine the point is that Ronald Regan was president in 1983, not Jimmy Carter? Except that it’s kind of lost, because who suggested that it was Jimmy Carter in the first place? You.

  8. Dawn Summers Says:

    No! “Republicans”! Sheesh!

  9. Petitedov Says:

Somehow in my head it’s still 2006 and not 2009. But, um, Reagan CUT taxes….your boy Obama not so much. Let’s see how well he does in about six months. BO is def. Carter II, just worse.

Dawn, you’re missing the rebuttal Republican argument. It goes like this:

Reagan’s unemployment numbers in 1983 were a direct result of Carter’s policies, even 3 years later. Obama’s unemployment numbers in 2009 are a direct result of Obama, all the time.

    Sound about right?

  11. Dawn Summers Says:

    hahahaha Jamie understands me.

Well, it is true the recession in the early ’80s was caused by an effort to get inflation under control. I know it’s customary to lay the inflation at Carter’s feet, but from what I understand it was a result of money the government printed for Vietnam coupled with a steep rise in energy prices. Jimmuh is an ongoing embarrassment to the country, but I’m not sure he can take the blame for the crappy economy in the late ’70s.

The most you could say is he didn’t raise rates to get inflation under control. But I’m not sure how much direct control the president has over interest rates, and Carter did appoint Paul Volker, who most people credit with strangling inflation, to the top post at the Fed.

The trouble with Obama is that he is not chocolately enough. The white in him is making him act like Carter.
