Where does the good go

Audience Participation Tuesday

If you found out your boyfriend/girlfriend’s parents were also brother and sister would you break up with him/her?

If you found out your boyfriend’s father killed his mother (Girlfriend’s mother killed her father), would you break up with her/him?

My answers are yes and yes. Probably wouldn’t say these were the reasons for the breakup, but they would be.

Yes to the first one, because um birth defects and I’ve read Middlesex – I don’t want that for my children.
Case by case basis, when you marry someone you’re also marrying their family so you know…

  2. Dawn Summers Says:

Middlesex was such a great book!

  3. VinNay Says:

Both of these people are probably very fucked up, so I wouldn’t be dating them in the first place.

But, in order to play along –

    1. Eventually. Couldn’t marry/have children with a genetic clusterfuck like that.

    2. Depends. Killed with a shotgun in anger? Wife assisted suicide? Has the girlfriend been through counseling on this?

  4. Karol Says:

Yes to the first one because, eww and the aforementioned birth defects…but mostly the ewww, how am I supposed to look at them? No to the second one, no one’s family is perfect.

  5. Dawn Summers Says:

“No one’s family is perfect” — but the same goes for the first one. Two siblings met later in life and fell in love…what? It happens! Not the kids fault and the kids look perfectly normal.

  6. Dawn Summers Says:

Um, Vinnay, I believe stabbed to death in a premediated way to stop the mom from leaving and getting a divorce over an internet affair she caught the dad having.

  7. pearatty Says:

No, and no. But then, I married a Republican.

  8. Dawn Summers Says:

Yeah, your “ew” tolerance is high.

  9. pearatty Says:

Yeah. Well, I actually wouldn’t keep dating either without a lot of thought and research. For the product of incest, I’d want genetic counseling and testing. Breaking up with someone because they have messed up genes through no fault of their own, though, seems weak. You can always adopt.

In both cases, I’d proceed veeery cautiously, and probably want to know that the person had been through a lot of counseling, and see concrete evidence that they’d worked through the related issues. (This might be less relevant in case # 1, if say, the person had been adopted out, and not raised by the siblings.)

  10. Dawn Summers Says:

Breaking up with someone because they have messed up genes through no fault of their own, though, seems weak.

Well, I wouldn’t tell them that’s why, I’d come up with something really good like “you never listen to me!” or “Who the hell roots for the Yankees??? Get out, jerk!”

  11. Karol Says:

Yeah, but the first one can have physical real-life implications for you (re future spawn).

But anyway, like I always tell you, for the right person you’ll overlook everything. And for the not-right person you’ll find fault in everything anyway, no incest needed.

  12. Dawn Summers Says:

“Get out, jerk!” hahahahahah Dawn funny. I should get a blog.

  13. Dawn Summers Says:

    Or a twitter thing.

  14. pearatty Says:

“But anyway, like I always tell you, for the right person you’ll overlook everything. And for the not-right person you’ll find fault in everything anyway,”

    I agree with Karol.

  15. pearatty Says:

“Yeah, but the first one can have physical real-life implications for you (re future spawn).”

Well, that’s why I said that you can always adopt (or do artificial insemination/buy a donor egg). To me, this is basically the same as breaking up with someone because you find out they’re infertile. I guess people do that, but again, it seems weak.

  16. F-Train Says:

I dunno, sounds an awful lot like revisiting the sins of the father upon the son to me. It’s not this person’s fault that his/her parents were fucked up. The scenarios that you list, in and of themselves, have nothing to do with this person’s ability to function in and maintain a healthy interpersonal relationship. Granted those scenarios might really fuck with that person’s head, but then the real reason to not see them anymore is because they’re fucked in the head and can’t maintain a healthy relationship.

  17. Dawn Summers Says:

Well, yeah. Some sins need to be revisited on the sons. Incest and homicide included, in my opinion. (Unless, evidently “it is the right person” in which case at the wedding we’ll be excusing the absence of the groom’s father/uncle because he is currently incarcerated for the murder of the groom’s mother/aunt.)

  18. pearatty Says:

I did date a guy once whose dad was his mother’s step-son. I broke up with him because he was an ass, though.

  19. pearatty Says:

    Also, I agree with F-Train.

  20. Dawn Summers Says:

That’s CRAZY pearatty!!! Being an ass is the most attractive feature in a man!

  21. Dawn Summers Says:

Also, the sentence “I agree with F-train” makes me uncomfortable.

  22. pearatty Says:

No, no, a man’s ass is his most attractive feature, but *being* an ass, not so much.

  23. pearatty Says:

“the sentence “I agree with F-train” makes me uncomfortable.”

Think how I felt having to say it.

  24. F-Train Says:

And they say *I’m* an assface. Pfft.

  25. pearatty Says:

If it makes you feel any better, it made me *way* more uncomfortable to say that I agreed with Karol.

  26. Dawn Summers Says:

Whoa! When did you say that??!! I must have passed out and then blocked the experience when I came to.

  27. Alceste Says:

Apparently, Dawn only reads the comments she leaves these days so that she can make herself laugh.

  28. Dawn Summers Says:

Hey, I will happily read any comments that make me laugh. Evidently, a comment agreeing with Karol makes me faint and forget the unpleasantness. How is that my fault?

  29. Karol Says:

It’s horrifying to me too but outside the realm of politics Pearatty and I agree a lot. Dawn and me, still no.

  30. Consigliere Says:

Depends on how hot she is.

  31. Dawn Summers Says:

hahahaah Consigliere wins! Although I would have also accepted “depending on how much he was worth.”

  32. Eric Says:

I can’t believe this is the thread that generates over thirty comments, even if most of them are Dawn’s.
