Black people vs…
First it was black folk vs. women. Now, it’s black folk versus gay folk. One report came in that after Prop 8 failed or passed or whichever was the bad result, gay people angrily turned on my people:
It was like being at a klan rally except the klansmen were wearing Abercrombie polos and Birkenstocks. YOU NIGGER, one man shouted at men. If your people want to call me a FAGGOT, I will call you a nigger. Someone else said same thing to me on the next block near the temple…me and my friend were walking, he is also gay but Korean, and a young WeHo clone said after last night the niggers better not come to West Hollywood if they knew what was BEST for them.
Essentially, or so the argument goes, since black people turned out in record numbers to vote for President-elect Obama, it must be their fault that Prop 8 passed by such a slim margin. I mean everybody knows that black people with their gospel choirs and “oh, lord take me home, Jesus” church going ways must hate those sodomite sinners and voted against equal rights for those deviants.
Right? Wrong.
According to Nate Silver, at the oh-so-addictive fivethirtyeight.com, says:
But the notion that Prop 8 passed because of the Obama turnout surge is silly. Exit polls suggest that first-time voters — the vast majority of whom were driven to turn out by Obama (he won 83 percent [!] of their votes) — voted against Prop 8 by a 62-38 margin. More experienced voters voted for the measure 56-44, however, providing for its passage.
Now, it’s true that if new voters had voted against Prop 8 at the same rates that they voted for Obama, the measure probably would have failed. But that does not mean that the new voters were harmful on balance — they were helpful on balance. If California’s electorate had been the same as it was in 2004, Prop 8 would have passed by a wider margin.
So, back off, the brothers and sisters in California. No, seriously, back off, those motherfuckers will bust a cap in yo ass.

Well, black or white, it was Obama voters who voted to get rid of gay marriage.

Right, because the McCain voters were all about it.

No but that was supposed to be where they were so for gay marriage, what else in this scenario could have so vastly upset the apple cart?

Mmmmm. I think the problem California gays have with black people has mostly to do with the fact blacks voted for prop 8 by a 70-30 margin.

Unfortunately, I think that some folks forget that the civil rights movement includes civil rights for everybody. Some people are so consumed by their religious beliefs that they don’t realize or some would say don’t care that they are discriminating against another group of people. And thus, they have no problems with imposing their beliefs on the rest of society. It’s sad really and underscores a bigger problem that gays face in certain segments of society.

Actually, there’s rampant racism in the gay community–even without Prop 8. Sounds like some see this as an opportunity to blow off some steam (yet again) at the expense of black people…

Oh…. so if gays are racist then it’s only fair that they be denied rights. I totally get it now, but why not deny every white person rights until the African American community is placated? That seems much more equitable, doesn’t it?

That’s why SSM advocates are picketing Mormon churches and not black churches.

WORD.

Blacks voted overwhelmingly for Prop 8, 70% for the Proposition that banned gay marriage. Don’t be silly, Dawn. Everyone knows that homosexuality is generally frowned upon by black culture. Not ALL black culture or blacks feel that way, but it exists. Now, just imagine being a black man at that rally. That’s a whole lotta stress.

This is all just a way for the capital class to keep the working class at each other’s throats.
November 13th, 2008 at 6:11 pm
Yes! I kept trying to think of a way to phrase that, but gave up at “c’mon we still all hate straight white protestant men, right?”

SSM advocates are picketing the Mormons because, with millions of dollars in funding and lots of out-of-state volunteers, the Mormon church led the Yes on 8 fight. Black churches were almost certainly not supportive - and if it was mentioned from the pulpit at all, opposed Prop 8 - but did not present the same financed and organized opposition that the Mormon church did.
And while African-Americans voted 70-30 against gay marriage, it still won a majority of the (far larger) white vote, so it is disingenuous to say it is the “fault” of Obama’s African-American voter coattails.

This is factually wrong. White people voted against prop 8 55-45.
