Iowa

Now that the hangover has worn off, I guess I mostly have seven words: If Iowa mattered, Gephardt would be President. Or at the very least he would have been the party nominee at least once. He wasn’t because it doesn’t. Obama and Edwards needed a win or strong finish in Iowa to gain plausibility. People like Clinton, Giuliani and Mccain just don’t need that kind of rubber stamp…they need big wins because that’s where the votes are. I’m not sure Giuliani has it exactly right with his ‘Fuck Iowa’ stance (though it amuses me that Karol endorsed the one candidate that blew off the race) but the idea that the “frontrunners” are finished because the primary voting portion of the littlest big state said so is ridiculous. And if history is any guide, we won’t really know till Super Tuesday who the giant slayers really are. Obviously congrats to Obama and Edwards, Hillary is going to need a strong plausible Vice President.
Ooh, burn.

lol, keep whistling, maybe the Obama man won’t catch you.

Iowa is always an expectations game more than anything else and it meant different things to Republicans than to Democrats. You guys had a clear frontrunner, our race was fluid, and everyone knew it. Iowa shattered that for you guys. I dunno, I still think Hil wins on your side but man do I like Obama putting up a fight.

Iowa caucuses are largely a battle to turn out party workers, party regulars, students, union members, nursing home residents and dead people. The stances candidates take in IA tend to be more extreme than those they will take in future primaries. It has little to do with actual viability except that it tests organizational skills. Otherwise, Giuliani is correct - it is a waste of campaign cash. OTOH, NH is an actual primary with real voters and is really the first test of a candidate’s appeal to rank and file voters.
