Digital Camera
So, Michael’s suggestion about the portable USB cord worked and we were able to upload photos straight from the card. Which begs the question: if the camera can still take pictures, and the card is functioning, why on earth cant I upload the pictures from the camera???

Sounds like a software/configuration problem in the camera. Could be a hardware problem with the connection on the camera end. Have you used the hammer yet?

I’m glad that the USB adapter worked. So now we know the card’s OK and the USB port on your PC is OK as well.
The problem could be with the USB controller in the camera, as Casca says — that could be bad without affecting the picture-taking part of the camera. Or it could be the USB cable that you used to connect the camera directly to the PC, or the downloading software on the PC.
The next things you could try: (1) uninstall and reinstall the camera software on your PC; (2) replace the USB cable for the camera. If neither of those work, it’s probably the camera.
Personally, I’ve decided it’s faster and less hassle to pop the SD card out of the camera and into an adapter when I want to download photos to my PC.
