The unofficial tallies showed the Democrat, Craig M. Johnson, winning about 53 percent of the votes to 46 percent for the Republican, Maureen O’Connell, with a lead of about 3,500 votes.
He will be the first Democratic state senator in a century to represent that part of Long Island, party leaders say.
