Depressing choices. I guess Ratner project shouldn't be issue in Congressional race but I hate to give the anti-Ratner folks pleasure by voting for Owens. Yet I might have to.

I don't know if I can claim to have grown up in that district, since my family actually lived within the boundaries of that strip of land that fell within the domain of publicity whore Hall of Fame inductee Charles Schumer, who was our congressman at the time, but I was raised in Flatbush, and still have immediate family living in either East Flatbush or Flatbush.

The thing that really annoys me about this race is that Yvette Clarke is actually favored to win. At least, had been before the revelation that she had defaulted on her college loans, and didn't even have a scrap of paper from one of those diploma mills, came to light.

Aside from being the completely inept, incompetent spawn of a completely inept, incompetent political hack-like mother, like daughter-she has predicated her entire campaign upon a set of assumptions that are completely inimical to quintessential American values.

Screw meritocracy!

You should vote for me because I have two x chromosomes, and was born in the West Indies, and am black.

Forget the fact that all of these things were completely out of my power, and I have no record of my own to brag about.

Even if these sentiments were expressed sotto voce they would still be repulsive, and yet the bitch beats you over the head with them!

Again, and again, and again.

I don't know what could be more offensive.

Oh yeah, the fact that she actually did graduate from Murrow. So she'll be the second-most famous alumna from my old high school, provided she actually did graduate from Murrow. I honestly hope she's lying about that too. It's embarassing enough that our most famous graduate to date is Marissa Tomei.

:/

I would probably vote for Owens-if I lived in the district, and was a Democrat-even though his philosophy is 180 degrees out of sync with my own.

Probably for the same reason, i.e. he's the only one gutsy enough to stand up to the expansion of Ratnerville.

"I'm all for gentrification...." shows a pretty ignorant view of what happens to communities of color when "gentrifiers" start to move in. If you'd like a better perspective, take a look at the U Street section of DC or the formerly Black communities of Hayes Valley and Western Addition in San Francisco. Black folks get scattered like so much sand.
Whites don't come in respecting who or what was there before them. They come in more like colonial settlers prepared to reshape an area in their likeness. Sadly this is usually done with the aquiesence of Black middle class folks who act as their lap dogs.

That's fine then.

By the way, when is your mom having us over for dinner? Some welcome committee that the ECB has. (FYI, I'm bringing the rest of the white folks with me.)

Also, there is this.

Nah, you've got the SRO across the street. Very different, insofar as that's where the customers go after the crack house.

I know the former crack house across the street from my mom’s building is for sale…buy it, move in and be all “what? i’m in the eleventh, bitch!”
Yeah. I did it! (Though I didn't rehab a crack house; it is still across the street. I think.)

Yeah, except for that little handle sticking into my neighborhood, the 11th is fairly reasonable. The 12th is just bizarre.

Also, I find it interesting that the people across the street from me are in a different district. I suppose the lines have to be drawn somewhere, but one block further west is the BQE, a more natural dividing line.

Who am I kidding. There's nothing natural about any of these lines.

And to clarify, he is in the one little part of Brooklyn Heights that is in the Eleventh District.

You know, that's even worse. If you're going to be an opportunist -- do it right. I know the former crack house across the street from my mom's building is for sale...buy it, move in and be all "what? i'm in the eleventh, bitch!"

The truth is that the 11th isn't crazy ... when compared to the 12th. I think that before it was ruled unconstitutional, Velazquez's district stretched far enough to include a piece of Westchester.

Well, aren't there instances where they might add whitefolk to ensure constitutionality of a majority-minority district (such as when necessary to make the demographics of the district more closely reflect that of the larger geographic area while still maintaining the majority-minority status)?

As I said in the last thread, I'm pretty sure the district was designed to be majority-minority, so I doubt they went out of their way to add in white people.

Transcript is kind of funny - if he'd just given the first answer (it's three blocks away) and last answer, then it'd hopefully be a non-issue.

In any event, it's a funny looking district. Was the little bit on the west side where it gets parts of Brooklyn Heights and Cobble Hill added to ensure there were more whitefolk in in?

My district too! Some white dude was handing out flyers in front of the subway yesterday morning for Yassky. As per my usual, though, I declined to take the propaganda.
