I’m heading out to Vegas in March/April. Where’s the best (read: cheap but doesn’t look like it; no gunfire a must) place to stay out there? Any good shows to see? And where’s the best poker?

cheap, clean, comfortable room on the strip - Imperial Palace. Just make sure you slip em a $20 at check-in so they give you a decent room.
Poker: MGM was hopping on Friday night. Excalibur, with the wheel, is always fun. Avoid Luxor. I don’t really care for Mandalay much either. Mirage is ok. Bellagio is cramped, but decent. And Wynn is supposed to be amazing.

The Palace Station Hotel/Casino was cheap when I found a special on expedia. probably cheaper than the popular strip hotels even without the special.
It’s right off the strip.
The piano bar at NY NY is a blast.

Which reminds me.
Two weeks after 9/11, Bellagio did a mailing offering hotel suites for $99. That was when absolutely no one was traveling. We bit and went to Bellagio for a 5 days. Much to my surprise, they kept their word. No gambling minimums. No trying to upgrade us. They actually gave us a large suit overlooking the fountains. I was very impressed by that hotel.
By the way, the other casinos were empty. Bellagio did not make any money on these rooms but neither did they have to layoff any employees.
I thought it was a very smart move.

I’ve stayed at the Mirage and Harrah’s. I liked the Mirage; Harrah’s was very average. As for deals in Vegas, Jason Says:

My first-hand knowledge of Vegas is 17 years old, but on my one trip there I stayed at the Las Vegas Club on Fremont Street downtown, which had reasonable rates and (more importantly) $1 minimum blackjack tables with what we termed Ted Kennedy rules (two-deck shoes, few restrictions on splitting and doubling-down — i.e., very liberal). But that was long before they turned Fremont Street into an Experience.
