Where does the good go

Elections are easier to win when the other side seems so deranged. But their behavior offends me as an American and as a human. They’re disgusting, tripping over themselves with glee at her protest and writing things like ‘An arrest will be a disaster for Bush. A growing crowd through the month will be a disaster for Bush. His only way out -– given his refusal to meet with Cindy -– is to hope that people get tired and go away.’ Their gross strategizing on the back of this woman with a dead son is a new low, even for people who make a lifestyle of hitting below the belt.

Suddenly, I agree.

Exploiting one woman’s personal sacrifice for a political agenda is a “new low, even for people who make a lifestyle of hitting below the belt.”

Except for the ‘new’ part.

    Two words: Terry Schiavo.

The media loves Sheehan. I don’t see anything wrong with showing that she doesn’t speak for all the parents of soldiers.

Keep in mind that Bush mentioned Sheehan only when asked specifically about her. He didn’t go up in front of camera and start mentioning her name. But I guess that was callous of him to mention a woman who has six men in her life risking their lives.

And let me clarify one thing. Cindy Sheehan did not make a sacrifice of any sort. Her son sacrificed his life. His mom had nothing to do with it and had, in fact, tried to talk him out of going. That’s a loss. Not a sacrifice.

Remember how unstoppable Mike Tyson was before he ran into Buster Douglas ? He ripped through everybody until a total bum and a 42 to 1 underdog beat him. I’m starting to think that’s what we’re seeing here. The same tactics that worked against McCain and Kerry aren’t working here. Even “Patriotic Conservatives” like Lowry and Frum recognize there is a problem here. What worked against Larry Holmes and Michael Spinks is not working against Buster Douglas. The president’s numbers stink, the numbers for the approval of the war stink. Trashing Cindy Sheehan isn’t going to turn this around. Bringing out other military families isn’t going to work either. The president has got to get in front of this pronto.
