TO REPUBLICANS IT’S ALL JUST A BIG JOKE
The recent firestorm about Bush making light of not finding any weapons of mass in Iraq, reminded me of a “joke” circulating the conservative blogs for a while now.
It goes something like this: Thanks to George W. Bush my two sons were killed in Iraq and I lost my job. If Clinton were President this never would have happened. Big punchline? Sincerely, Saddam Hussein.
Doubled over in hysterics, yet?
I know, they think they’re clever, but what makes this “joke” possible is the reality that many families are being forever changed by the deaths of soldiers in combat zones around the world and many people who aren’t Saddam have lost their jobs and are struggling to stay afloat on a mixture of credit debt and alcohol.
It’s all fun and games when we’re talking meglomaniacal dictator, but what about your dad? or your mom? or you?

…and humorous comparisons of Bush to Hitler trivializes the suffering of Holocaust victims. And mocking Bush’s failure to find WMD’s is a slap in the face to the girls who were raped because of their fathers’ opposition to Saddam Hussein. (Or who were raped because they committed the crime of being pretty within sight of Uday Hussein)
Joking in situations that aren’t funny is a way of life. It helps us deal. Most of the time, it’s nothing more than that.

joking in situations that aren’t funny helps us deal. joking about things that are very personal and very painful when you are responsible for that pain is cruel.

I think what Rick says is right. Now was it funny when osama joked that if the 9/11 hijackers didn’t know that it was a suicide mission then, they sure do know now.
