I saw Clarke on Meet the Press this morning. He’s clearly got a hard-on for the Bushies, but that may only be because they have identified him as a threat and have now mobilized the Machinery against him.
My favorite moment was when (this is all paraphrase based on recollection) Russert walked through some evidence (including mostly Clarke’s own words) that the Clinton administration hadn’t done as much as it should/could have against al Qaeda/terrorism, and then asked Clarke how, given all that evidence, he could accuse the Bush administration of having dropped the ball. Clarke’s reply was something like, “Well, the Clinton administration didn’t do nearly enough, but the Bush administration didn’t do anything. That’s how I can say that.”
Clarke clearly has an interest in minimizing his own failures w/ respect to national security, but the contrast between Sandy Berger and Condi Rice is a chilling one.
