I work a block away from the main branch of the NYPL Research Library and the mid-manhattan. This summer I read three books on Pascal during lunch hours in an attempt to completely escape the office. I discovered that you can actually do some browsing in the main reading room on the sides, they have a great philosophy section. If you have a laptop, connecting is easy. Now I have started doing some browsing in the periodical stacks at mid-manhattan which has much more of a community feel being a branch library. Educating yourself is hard, but an addiction (hopefully) that is unapologetically enriching.

Charles 2 describes it well. When I go back to my hometown, a visit to the old library is at the top of my list. It feels great.

Despite having more than everything my library had (long, long time ago), I still miss the atmosphere of a public library... Books and magazines have a certain smell - but it's more than a smell - almost like the information, the knowledge - wafts around on the air.

It's a heady perfume, my fellow geeks/dorks/eggheads/whatever!!

Heeehheeee. I'm not a dork like you :-) and I used to love the library (now I have a lot of what the library offers at home). My mom would drop me off there at 3pm and come get me when it closed at 9 or so. Yes, free babysitting is a great thing.
